Who we are:

Dymer is a band that seeks to explore sonic contrasts: light and dark, pop and progressive, hard and soft. We hope to challenge listeners to continually re-evaluate their perspectives and explore new possibilities.

. HISTORY .

Formed in 2016 by Jonny Mouchet, Dymer began as a 3 piece project with Jonny on vocals and bass, Matt Moore on drums, and Luke Sowers on guitar. They began writing with two prompts: "Contrast" and "Space". This formed the inspiration for the band's black and white aesthetic, the theme of their first record, and an ethic that is still pursued in their live performances to this day.

After playing a few shows around town, Dymer began recording "Empty Space" with Edgar Hernandez which developed and grew the band and their musicianship, honing the sound into something wholly unique within the scene. Neither being heavy enough to fit with metal and hardcore, but too loud and abrasive to play at the breweries and coffeeshops, Dymer has remained something of a sonic anomaly. By the release of Empty Space in 2018, they were headlining shows around Albuquerque. However, soon each member turned their individual attentions to other pursuits culminating with the COVID 19 pandemic, halting live performances entirely.

In relative isolation, from late 2019-2022 Jonny began writing and recording original music himself which became two companion EPs: Shelter in December 2019 and Storm in October 2022. The band rotated through several lineups and iterations through this period until finally landing back as a 3 piece in the beginning of 2023 with Jonny on bass and vocals, Tom Burton on drums, and Mark Vasquez on guitar. The group has continued to write, perform, and record together around Albuquerque, and with the addition of James Alexander on bass and Ken Chavez on guitar, are looking foreward to releasing their new record "The End is Always Nigh, The End is Never Now" in July 2025.

. THE NAME .

The name Dymer comes from an epic poem published under the name "Clive Hamilton" which was an early pseudonym of the writer C.S. Lewis, famous for "The Chronicles of Narnia" series and other works in fantasy and Christianity. Interestingly enough, Dymer was one of only two published works that he published before returning to Christianity as an adult. This anomaly and ambiguity attracted Jonny to the poem in his college years as he began to critically evaluate more of his worldview growing up in church.

The poem Dymer is set in a sort of sterile fascist state called "The Perfect City" which has been entirely purged of all passion and connection to the natural world. One day while sitting in a classroom, a young man named Dymer encounters a spirit in the form of a bird and the spring breeze, which inspires him in a fit of laughter to kill his teacher, flee the city, and renounce all connection to society. What begins as a celebration of all things natural, lively, and free, quickly turns to a reflection of confusion, isolation, and despair. The poem culminates with Dymer fighting and dying by the hand of a sort of monstrous demi-god progeny he unwittingly created, which in turn is turned back into a sort of godlike manifestation of springtime again upon the death of Dymer.

There are many ways one could interpret the poem but here's some of what it meant to Jonny:

- Neither society nor nature can contain ultimate truth. You must create your own structure.
- Embrace new experience, but consider the consequences of your actions and how everything is connected.
- Both death and life must be understood and embraced for anything to grow.
